The Ministry of Trade (MoT) site is composed of two buildings, each eight stories tall with each floor approximately 905 square meters in size. The existing buildings were severely damaged when they were stripped of all usable fixtures and materials. For this project, Tetra Tech provided D-B services to renovate the MoT Headquarters Buildings located in central Baghdad, Iraq, under our AFCEE WERC. These buildings are the main location in feeding the Iraqi people. Highlights of this construction/renovation include:
- Performed planning, design, construction, demolition, repair, O&M, inspection and supervision necessary to renovate and improve the Ministry of Trade (MoT) Headquarters Buildings (two 8-story buildings, ~156,000 sq ft).
- Architectural renovations: windows, doors, floor covering, interior walls, ceilings, and fixtures replaced according to a balanced quantity and graded approach to quality within a specified budget.
- Civil works: repaired and/or replaced site grading, walks, drives, and parking using nearly 11,000 SF of asphalt, 3,300 LF of fences, sanitary sewers, storm sewers and water distribution systems using 1,300 LF of water mains.
- Tetra Tech worked over 750,000 hours using a 98.5% Iraqi workforce, with an average of 150 workers at the site and a peak of 500.
- Avoided about $1M in employee change-outs cost in Year 1, compared to costs incurred by other contractors doing similar work.
- “The design/build contractor, [Tetra Tech], has done value engineering and determined that it would be more economical and more beneficial to the Ministry of Trade to rehabilitate permanent facilities on the site…” Excerpt from PCO Press Release dated 9-7-04 on Ministry of Trade walk-through.
Safety Highlight. Continuously applied lessons learned to conduct work safely in a remote, austere and hostile environment while relying upon a 98.5% local workforce.
