USACE New England District issued a work order to Tetra Tech to bring a 3 million gallon per day (mgd) water supply on-line by July 31, 2001 at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). This urgent need to develop additional water supplies for the communities of Upper Cape Cod arose from years of groundwater contamination and increasing potable water demand from rapid growth of the area. Rather than attempt to provide numerous sources in five towns, a regional system was devised that would locate wells centrally on the MMR and distribute the water to the independent systems.
- Delivered three public supply wells permitted to withdraw one mgd each (with a total potential of 6 mgd) and designed a system to convey and distribute it to the five end user communities.
- Completed design and construction of the source wells and distribution system, consisting of three pump stations, a 500,000 gallon elevated tank and 12 miles of 12 to 24-inch diameter water distribution piping.
- Met DoD’s aggressive schedule: the system was capable of delivering potable water by July 30, 2001. DoD, Undersecretaries of the Army, and Congressman Dellahunt, along with local communities, celebrated the fulfillment of this objective at a ceremony held on August 10, 2001.
- Completed construction in 23 months by implementing unified effort with New England District and the MMR Joint Project Office.
- 2001 – Recognized as Outstanding Ground Water Supply Project by National Ground Water Association and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
- 2002 – Recognized at the New England District’s June 2002 Founder Day Celebration as the District’s Project Team of the Year.
Safety Highlight. Project was completed without a recordable injury or illness with over 90,000 hours worked, contributing to the receipt of two National Safety Council Awards.
